Radiation therapy is a well-established treatment for prostate cancer that is provided in different ways with the aim of controlling the cancer and limiting side effects (Kamran and Zietman 2021). For lowand favorable intermediate-risk prostate cancer, it is usually given as the sole treatment; for unfavorable intermediate and high-risk prostate cancer, androgen deprivation therapy is usually added. (Kamran and D’Amico 2020)

Ruby seemed satisfied with her husband’s explanation for deciding to have radiation therapy. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was offered lumpectomy and radiation rather than surgical removal of the affected breast, and she was happy with her treatment. And she was still happy all these years later without any signs that the cancer had come back. Chris, their second son, did not express an opinion about his father’s decision; this was just the way he was—happy to stand on the sidelines on any discussion or decision. He had always been like this, and neither of his parents were surprised.

Bruce, on the other hand, wanted even more involvement than his father thought necessary. He had taken it upon himself to do some research into the treatment options available to his dad. This involved a lot of time looking online for alternative treatments, and he had even called a couple of surgeons and radiation oncologists to ask their opinion! He didn’t tell his parents that none of them was willing to express an opinion beyond suggesting that his father, the patient, needed to have confidence in the treating physician. Bruce told his parents that he had done some research and he thought that his father had not considered any other options.

John was not happy with what Bruce had done. Yes, he knew it was with the best of intentions, but it felt to him like Bruce thought he was stupid and not capable of making his own decisions. Before they got into another one of their arguments, Ruby stepped in.

“Bruce, this is your father’s body and it’s his decision! You didn’t interfere when I had cancer!”

“Well, that was years ago!” Bruce responded. “And I didn’t have the contacts that I have now! I’m only trying to help. Forgive me for giving a damn!”
